June 2010
 Message from Doug

Even though summer hasn’t officially started, it sure feels like summer here in Pleasanton, CA. My summer travel season has begun so I’m spending more Doug Sleeterand more time around the country. Sherrill, David and I just returned from the California Business and Accounting Show in Los Angeles where I spoke to over 200 accountants about online technologies.

Next week (6/22/10) I will be co-presenting with Sleeter Group Consultant Shelly Robbins of The QuickSouce at the 2010 Advanced QuickBooks Training in Seattle, WA. Visit www.thequicksource.com for more information and to register.

I will be visiting with many other QuickBooks Meet-ups and local accounting groups around the country this summer. I really enjoy seeing many of you face-to-face as well as learning and sharing what is new in the world of accounting technology.

I’ve long been a proponent of using online technologies for your clients and for your practice. Web applications and services are changing the paradigm for how we provide accounting services. With this in mind, we are hitting the road in the next few months to offer our new one-day seminar Taking Your Clients Online: How to Transform Your Client Relationships Using Cloud Computing. I’m teaming up with Darren Root of RootWorks for this seminar tour and we’ll be coming to a city near you sometime soon. Thanks to the generosity of our five Seminar sponsors, including Method Integration, Bill.com, SmartVault, InsynQ, and Sage, we have just significantly lowered your cost to attend.

I hope to  see you there!

Every day, members of the Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network Experts Forum.

Question: Does anyone know if there is a way to permanently assign a class to a customer? I have a client who wants to track sales by state. I was thinking of using classes unless anyone has a better idea.

Brian Mowbray responded: There was a recent thread where someone set up a custom field for "State."  Not the ideal solution but I would reserve my classes for other things.

Laura Dion chimed in: If you aren’t using Sales Reps, this would be the simplest.

Betty Van Dyck added: I have used Customer Type for state identification. You can get revenue reports. This has worked satisfactorily for 1M per month client doing business in 50 states.

Final Response: Excellent ideas. Thanks! I tried Customer Type and it worked perfectly.

Total Response Time: Under 2 hours!
