 Message from Doug

So much is Doug Sleeterhappening here at The Sleeter Group, it can be hard to keep up with it all. Our newsletter this month is filled with opportunities for you to learn more about QuickBooks and about your business – through our Consultant’s Reference Guide, Webinars, Online Conference Library, and of course, our annual Accounting Solutions Conference.

It’s always an exciting time for us when we announce the dates of our annual Conference. Sherrill SleeterThere is so much that goes into creating a top-notch event that is valuable for attendees and includes cutting edge, useful sessions. As many of you know, the magician behind the scenes of our Conference each year is my valentine, Sherrill Sleeter, who works tirelessly to make the Conference an incredible experience for everyone. Whether it is negotiating with the hotel for the best room rates for attendees, working with the exhibitors, or engaging with attendees, Sherrill is always striving to make each Conference great. So thanks Sherrill, you make it all look so easy.

I just got back from "Vendor Week" at The CPA Technology Advisor magazine. This is an annual event where the magazine helps software companies learn more about the accounting profession, and more about how to succeed with products and services. It was a great event and I saw some great new products about which you’ll be hearing more about soon.

Later this month, I’m heading to Detroit to learn more about Thomson Reuters’ solutions in the tax and accounting software area. This company has been in the market for years and many of our accounting firms have used their products for tax and write-up. After that, I’m heading to New York to meet the team at Accountants World who exhibited at our Conference last year. Their online accounting products are aimed at accountants as a tool to help them better serve clients using online portals. I’ll be writing more about their product in the near future—it has got some compelling features for accountants.

As technology emerges, we’re doing our best to help all of you navigate the waters of innovation.

 Tricks of the Trade

Every day, members of the Sleeter Group Consultants Network tackle the day-to-day problems of their clients in the real world. The following is an example problem and solution that surfaced this month on our Sleeter Group Consultants Network Expert Forum.

Question: This there a tool or an easy way to clear the "Billable" box on thousands of checks and bills with the box checked? Hopefully the only solution is not just opening each transaction and unchecking the box. Thanks for any ideas!

Liz Fleming responded: Hooray! I have an answer and I can reply before someone else does! :-) Yes, there’s an easy way to clear the "Billable" box. Just create bogus invoices and all of the icons on the bills or checks will change to "billed" and then DELETE the bogus invoices & the icon will not change back to "unbillable". I’ve done this and it works.

Bonnie Nagayama added: It is not a great solution, but I have cleared them more efficiently by going into an Invoice and on the Time/Cost screen placing a checkmark in the hide column. As I said, it is still not pretty because you have to do it by Customer:Job, but it is better than transaction by transaction. There used to be a product from Samurai Systems that let you change the print status but last time I checked it had not been updated since mid-2000 and today it looks like it has been pulled.

Stuart McClain chimed in: One of the BIG issues here was incorrectly coding expenses directly to COGS account – which become BILLABLE but cannot be unmarked. This is not an issue if you use Items that post to COGS.
